COMME DES GARCONS BLACK
Brought into the spotlight in 2009, the creation of BLACK also allowed for a new price point aimed at making the brand’s most refined pieces more accessible to their following. Nothing describes the theme of the brand better than the situation responsible for its formation: recession. This sense of necessity drives its theme, and essentially explains why it represents such an important milestone in their history.
Created out of a desire to retaliate against the constantly-inflating luxury fashion industry, Comme des Garcons BLACK takes Japan’s largest label back to basics. A brand typically known for bright graphics and colors, the diffusion brings about a complete 180 for CDG, making sure to perfect and showcase every detail of their unique cuts and shapes.
Additionally the diffusion brand’s simplistic name is not just based on color, but theme. Brand head Rei Kawakubo established herself in part through her deconstructed designs, continuing to showcase her advancements in the fashion world and why her empire’s three-letter title is so recognizable.
